As the warmth of summer invites us outside, there's no better time to celebrate National Trail Day on June 1st. This day is dedicated to encouraging people to explore the beauty of nature by hiking trails and enjoying the great outdoors. At UV Skinz, we're passionate about promoting a sun-safe lifestyle, so it’s only natural that we’re excited about National Trail Day. Plus, did you know that our very own founder and CEO raised her family in the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range? The great outdoors has been an inspiration behind UV Skinz’ mission for many years.

Throughout this article, we’ll dive into the history of National Trail Day, discuss how you can make the pledge to get outside more and share some helpful tips for enjoying the trails while staying protected.

History of National Trail Day:

National Trail Day, organized by the American Hiking Society, is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of June. It was established to promote awareness of trail systems and encourage people to discover the joy of hiking. From local nature walks to challenging mountain hikes, National Trail Day offers an opportunity for everyone to connect with nature and appreciate the benefits of outdoor recreation.

Why National Trail Day Matters:

National Trail Day is a movement to foster a deeper connection with nature. Spending time outdoors is known to promote physical and mental health as well as reducing stress, improving mood, and boosting overall well-being. For families, it's a chance to bond and create lasting memories while exploring the wonders of the natural world. By participating in National Trail Day, we also contribute to the preservation and maintenance of trails, ensuring they remain accessible and enjoyable for generations to come.

Pledge to Get Outside:

This National Trail Day, we invite you to commit to spending more time in nature. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life, breathe in some fresh air, and enjoy an outdoor adventure. Here are some ways to make the most of your pledge:

  1. Set Goals: Start by setting a goal that is achievable for your lifestyle. Whether it's hiking a new trail each month, taking weekly nature walks, or planning a family camping trip, having specific goals can keep you motivated and excited.
  2. Explore Local Trails: You don’t need to travel far to enjoy the great outdoors. Local parks and nature reserves often have beautiful trails waiting to be explored. Research nearby trails and make a list of ones you’d like to visit.
  3. Join a Hiking Group: Connecting with a hiking group or outdoor club can provide a sense of community and accountability. It's also a great way to meet like-minded individuals.
  4. Document Your Journey: Keep a journal, start a blog, or find a fitness app that excites you to track and document your outdoor adventures. Not only will this help you track your progress, but it can also inspire others to join the movement and embrace the benefits of spending time in nature.

Sun-Safe Tips for Hitting the Trails:

While exploring the outdoors, it's important to stay protected from the sun's harmful UV rays. Here are some of our go-to tips to ensure you can enjoy your hiking adventures without compromising your skin health:

  1. Wear Sun-Protective Clothing: Choose lightweight, UV-protective clothing that covers your skin. Long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats provide excellent protection. UV Skinz offers a range of sun-safe hiking gear designed to keep you comfortable and protected on the trails.
  2. Apply Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to all exposed skin. Don't forget areas like the back of your neck, ears, and the tops of your feet. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you're sweating heavily.
  3. Seek Shade: Whenever possible, take breaks in shaded areas to reduce your direct sun exposure.
  4. Wear Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from UV radiation by wearing sunglasses with 100% UV protection.
  5. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can increase your risk of heat-related illnesses. Carry plenty of water and drink regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Where Team UV Skinz Loves to Hike:

Embracing the spirit of National Trail Day, our team at UV Skinz is not just passionate about creating sun-safe gear but also avid hikers themselves. Here are some of our favorite trails, each offering unique challenges and breathtaking views. Whether you're looking for inspiration for your next hiking adventure or just want to explore from afar, let our team's favorite spots motivate you to get outside and enjoy the natural beauty.

“One of my favorite trails is Laie Falls Trail. It's about 8 miles round trip and an elevation gain of 1800ft. It's a challenging, but extremely rewarding hike with the views you get along the way as well as being able to dive into the waterfall at the end. It's definitely a muddy trek, but that just adds to the fun.”

~ Gabriella Walton, E-Commerce Coordinator

“My favorite trail is Pali Puka. I like it because it is steep and gives me a good workout and also has fun jungle vibes, then once the top is reached the views are unmatched. Especially through the "puka" aka hole, in the rocks which the hike was named after.”

~ Caleb Farwell, National Sales Representative

“My favorite trail is the Mount Healy Overlook Trail which faces Denali. It is only 2.7 miles but the elevation gain is 1,700ft. If you are ever in AK, you have to do it!”

~ Andra Prior, Customer Service Lead

“I love the hike around Jenkinson Lake (8 miles) in Sly Park for my local fav. But the most beautiful one I've done in the last year (and well worth it for an overnight camp trip to explore) is the Loch Leven Lakes trail via Salmon Lake. When we went in the Fall, we lost count at 9 alpine lakes. Absolutely GORGEOUS.”

~ Lorilee Lucas, Design and Development Lead

“My favorite trail is the Cleetwood Cove Trail which takes you down to Crater Lake in Oregon. It is a steep trail that drops 700ft in elevation in only 1.1 miles, but once you reach the bottom you are rewarded with the insanely clear, cool water inside the sleeping volcano. My favorite part is once you reach the bottom you can go about your day like a regular day on the lake until you're ready to make the trek back up!”

~ Alyssa Price, Customer Service Representative

“The French Trail in Oakland's Redwood Park. The trail takes you into an ancient redwood forest filled with lush ferns. It is so peaceful. It also makes you feel like you are on Endor with the Ewoks.”

~ Chad Johnson, Information Systems Manager

“I've only been there once but I really enjoyed hiking the Willow Creek trail near Bass Lake, specifically hiking to Devil's Slide. There were a lot of water pools on this hike and the waterfalls were beautiful!”

~ Jenna Metheny, Office Manager
