World Cancer Day: How Sun Protection Supports Lifelong Health

Every year on February 4, World Cancer Day encourages people around the world to raise awareness, take action, and learn more about how to reduce their risk of cancer.

At UV Skinz, this mission is personal. Our company was founded in memory of Darren Farwell, a father who passed away from melanoma at the age of 32. His story is the reason we do what we do, and it’s why skin cancer prevention is at the heart of our work all year long.

World Cancer Day is a powerful reminder that small, everyday choices matter. And when it comes to skin cancer, those choices can truly make a difference.

Skin Cancer Is the Most Common Form of Cancer in the U.S.

More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year than all other cancers combined. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70.

The good news is that up to 90% of skin cancers are preventable. That makes skin cancer one of the few cancers where daily habits really can lower your risk.

Whether it’s wearing UPF 50+ clothing, using sunscreen, or staying out of peak sun hours, consistent protection adds up. So does education. Knowing how to protect your skin is the first step toward keeping it healthy.

Sun Damage Builds Over Time

Most sun damage doesn’t happen in one big sunburn. It happens slowly, through years of casual exposure. A walk to the mailbox, a morning in the garden, an afternoon on the patio. These small moments often go unnoticed in the moment but can lead to skin cancer, premature aging, and other serious skin issues over time.

That’s why it’s important to build habits that make protection feel natural. A long-sleeve shirt here, a wide-brim hat there, a bit of extra shade when you can find it. These simple steps compound over time and can have a powerful effect on keeping your skin safe and healthy.

Prevention Starts with Daily Habits

World Cancer Day is a good time to check in on your sun protection routine. You don’t have to do everything perfectly, but being consistent with a few smart choices can make a real difference.

Here are some of the most effective ways to lower your risk:

  • Wear certified UPF 50+ clothing when outdoors
  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) on exposed skin
  • Avoid tanning beds and opt for safer options like sunless tanning products
  • Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV levels are highest
  • Schedule annual skin checks with a board-certified dermatologist

UPF clothing plays a unique role in prevention because it doesn’t need reapplying. It stays on during activity and offers consistent protection you can count on, whether you're hiking a trail or heading to the grocery store.

A Mission That Lasts Beyond One Day

Whether you’ve been sun-safe for decades or are just starting to pay attention, it’s never too late (or too early) to protect your skin. Start with a skin check, add a new sun-safe habit, and help others do the same.

At UV Skinz, we believe cancer prevention deserves more attention all year long. That’s why we’ll be sharing more education and tools throughout February in honor of Cancer Prevention Month.

Because sun protection isn’t just about avoiding harm. It’s about creating small habits that support your health: today, tomorrow, and for all the years ahead.
