19 Sun-Safe Tips to Celebrate 19 Years of UV Skinz
At UV Skinz, sun protection isn’t just what we do, it’s why we exist. Nineteen years ago, we were founded with a simple, powerful mission: to help families live safer, healthier lives in the sun. Since then, we’ve grown, evolved, and expanded our reach, but the heart of our mission hasn’t changed.
To celebrate 19 years of protecting what matters most, we’re sharing 19 science-backed, family-friendly tips to help you live a sun-safe life at any age, in any season. Whether you're a longtime UV Skinz customer or just beginning to learn about UV protection, these reminders are designed to keep you and your loved ones covered, confident, and informed.
1. Get an Annual Skin Exam
The single most important thing you can do for your long-term skin health is get checked by a board-certified dermatologist once a year. Early detection of skin cancer, especially melanoma, saves lives. Full-body skin exams are fast, painless, and should be part of your regular preventive care.
2. Know the UV Index
The UV Index tells you how strong the sun’s rays are each day. Check it every morning (most weather apps show it) and plan your time outdoors accordingly. A UV Index of 3 or higher calls for protective clothing, sunscreen, and shade breaks, no matter the temperature.
3. Prioritize UPF Clothing
Unlike regular clothes, UPF-rated garments are tested to block UV rays. Choose certified UPF 50+ clothing for reliable protection that won’t wash off or wear away during the day.
4. Wear a Wide-Brim Hat
A good sun hat protects your face, scalp, ears, and neck, places that are often missed with sunscreen. Choose a hat with a brim of at least 3 inches, and make sure it's breathable and comfortable so you'll actually keep it on.
5. Teach Kids Sun Safety Early
Sun damage accumulates over time, and much of it happens in childhood. Get your kids in the habit of sun protection from the start. Make it part of your morning routine, just like brushing teeth or packing lunch.
6. Seek Shade During Peak Hours
The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Plan outdoor activities earlier or later in the day, and look for shade when you can, especially during breaks, meals, and downtime.
7. Understand UVA vs. UVB Rays
UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to aging and skin cancer. UVB rays cause burning. The best sun protection, whether clothing or sunscreen, blocks both.
8. Protect Your Eyes
UV rays can damage your eyes, leading to cataracts and other issues. Choose sunglasses labeled with 100% UVA/UVB protection, and make sure kids wear them too.
9. Cover Your Hands and Feet
Hands and tops of feet are often overlooked. Opt for long sleeves with thumbholes and beach shoes or sandals that offer coverage, or be diligent about applying sunscreen to these areas.
10. Reapply Sunscreen Often
If you’re relying on sunscreen instead of clothing, reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. No sunscreen is truly all-day.
11. Check the Labels
Look for "broad-spectrum" on your sunscreen and UPF 50+ on your clothing. These designations matter. If it’s not labeled, it’s not guaranteed to protect.
12. Remember: UV Rays Reflect
UV rays can bounce off sand, snow, water, and even concrete. That means you’re still getting exposure in the shade or on cloudy days. Don’t let indirect rays catch you off guard.
13. Make Your Car Sun-Safe
Your driver’s side arm and face get more sun than you think. Consider UV-filtering window film or UPF sleeves and hats when driving long distances.
14. Don’t Forget Your Ears and Neck
These are common sites for skin cancer and often missed when applying sunscreen. Clothing with high collars or hooded designs adds effortless protection.
15. Keep an Eye on Medications
Some medications, including certain antibiotics, acne treatments, and antihistamines, increase sun sensitivity. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if yours could make you more prone to burns.
16. Travel with Protection
Whether you're heading to the mountains or the beach, pack light, breathable UPF layers, a hat, and sun-safe swim gear. You’ll thank yourself later.
17. Check Your Skin Regularly
Know your baseline and watch for changes in size, shape, or color of moles and spots. Monthly self-checks are a smart habit for everyone.
18. Make Shade a Habit
From patio umbrellas to stroller covers, shade is one of the easiest ways to reduce UV exposure. Set up your space to naturally encourage shade breaks.
19. Make Sun Safety Part of Your Identity
Sun protection isn’t just something you do. It’s part of who you are. Lead by example, build it into your routines, and help normalize the idea that caring for your skin is a lifelong habit.
