How One Annual Habit Could Save Your Skin (and Your Life)
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and also one of the most preventable. But prevention doesn’t just mean wearing sunscreen or covering up in the sun. It also means staying alert to changes in your skin.
One of the most effective tools for early detection is something simple: a skin check.
Whether it’s a quick look in the mirror or an annual visit to a board-certified dermatologist, getting familiar with your skin can help you catch concerns early, when they’re most treatable.
Why Skin Checks Matter
More than 5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S., and rates continue to rise. But when found early, skin cancer is highly treatable. In fact, the 5-year survival rate for melanoma (the most dangerous form of skin cancer) is 99% when caught at an early stage.
That’s why both dermatologists and public health experts recommend regular skin exams, even if you don’t have a personal or family history of skin cancer.
By checking your skin consistently and scheduling professional exams annually, you increase your chances of noticing something new or unusual before it becomes more serious.
What to Look For
Most skin cancers develop in areas that get regular sun exposure, like the face, neck, arms, ears, and hands. But they can appear anywhere, including spots not typically exposed to the sun.
It helps to learn the ABCDEs of melanoma, a tool doctors use to spot early warning signs:
- A – Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
- B – Border: Edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred
- C – Color: Uneven shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue
- D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
- E – Evolving: Changes in size, shape, color, or symptoms like itching or bleeding
Other signs to watch for include new growths, sores that don’t heal, or any mole that changes quickly.
How to Do a Self-Check
Once a month, take a few minutes to examine your skin in good lighting. Use a full-length mirror and a hand mirror to check hard-to-see areas like your back, scalp, and behind your ears.
Here’s a quick guide to follow:
- Start with your face, neck, and ears
- Check arms, underarms, chest, and torso
- Examine legs, feet, soles, and between your toes
- Don’t forget the palms and nails
- Use a handheld mirror to check your back, shoulders, and backside
- Ask a partner or family member to help with areas like the scalp
It helps to take photos or notes so you can track any changes over time.
Don’t Skip Your Dermatologist Visit
Even if you check your skin regularly at home, a dermatologist’s exam is still essential. They have the tools and expertise to catch what you might miss, and they can guide you through the next steps if something needs a closer look.
If you’ve never had a professional skin exam, there’s no better time to start. And if it’s been more than a year, consider this your reminder to schedule one soon.
Early Detection Saves Lives
At UV Skinz, we talk a lot about daily sun protection, and for good reason. But no sun-safe routine is complete without staying aware of what’s happening with your skin.
Annual checks are one of the easiest and most important ways to take control of your long-term health. They can give you peace of mind, strengthen your awareness, and potentially save your life.
So if you’re building a healthier routine this year, start with a checkup. And bring a friend or loved one along with you. Sometimes the best kind of prevention is one we don’t do alone.
