Your Skin Keeps Score: Make Your Routine Count
Skin health isn’t just about what you do once in a while. It’s about what you do every day.
From morning walks to weekend errands, small moments of sun exposure add up over time. But so do the small habits that protect you. That’s why a thoughtful, sun-safe daily routine is one of the most powerful tools we have in preventing skin cancer.
Why Routine Matters
Most skin cancer doesn’t come from one bad sunburn. It comes from years of casual, everyday exposure. The kind you get when walking the dog, gardening, driving with the windows down, or standing in line at the farmer’s market.
It may not feel like much at the time—but your skin keeps score.
Consistent, simple habits can significantly reduce your lifetime exposure to harmful UV rays. And the earlier you start, the more impact those habits can have.
What a Sun-Safe Routine Can Look Like
Sun protection doesn’t need to be complicated. A good routine should feel realistic, repeatable, and tailored to your lifestyle.
Here are a few foundational habits to consider:
1. Make Getting Dressed Your First Line of Defense
Start your day by putting on certified UPF 50+ clothing. A long-sleeve shirt, wide-brim hat, or lightweight pants can block over 98% of harmful UVA and UVB rays, without needing reapplication.
2. Apply Sunscreen to Exposed Skin
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) on your face, hands, neck, and any other uncovered areas. Reapply every two hours if you’re outside for long periods, or after sweating or swimming.
3. Plan Around the UV Index
If your day is flexible, try to avoid outdoor activities during peak UV hours (typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). You can check the UV Index using a weather app to stay informed.
4. Seek Shade When You Can
Whether it’s under an umbrella, a tree, or the brim of your hat, shade adds another layer of protection when you’re outside.
5. Do Regular Skin Checks
Daily protection is important, but so is regular monitoring. Give yourself a quick once-over monthly to spot any new or changing spots, and schedule an annual skin exam with a board-certified dermatologist.

Build What Works for You
A skin-healthy routine doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. What matters is that you find habits that are easy to maintain and make sense for your life.
You might start with just one change—wearing a sun shirt on walks, or keeping a hat in your car. Over time, those habits build. And your future skin will thank you for it.
